Rip to river classic

The Run is confined entirely to the magnificent surf beach between the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse and Ocean Grove (the Barwon River is just across The Spit). The distance is approximately 10 kms depending on tide and beach conditions. There is a short cut but you will need bathers and flippers (the course has actually been swum!).

It all begins on the beach below the towering Point Lonsdale lighthouse. Take beach access tracks 3W or 2W to the beach for a warm-up jog to the start line or track 1W directly to the start line from Stoneman Reserve (Melway Map 497 G2). Timed to start at low tide, the majority of the course is on a wide expanse of firm sand. Just to make things interesting though are the occasional soft sand patches around the first section of the course, but then it is only a matter of dodging the odd reef, rotting pile of seaweed or dead whale (or flathead). Having a slightly longer left leg is a distinct advantage. The wind can be either a magnificent tail wind or a howling headwind.

Civilisation is passed briefly at the Ocean Grove main beach (Melway Map 499 J6) where you can wave bravely to supporters or make an inconspicuous retreat to a waiting getaway car.

Keep to the left of the course markers and make your way to the U-turn marker located 700 metres past the finish line. Now heading back to the Ocean Grove main beach continue to keep to the left of the course markers; check-out your lead on the opposition or friends and then sprint for the finish line in front of the magnificent Ocean Grove Surf Beach Complex.

Look back across Bass Strait and see where you have come from. Drive (or jog) across Barwon Heads bridge to the top of the Pearl Bay (Barwon Heads) Bluff and take in the magnificent view of your accomplishment. From there you can also see “Diver Dans” shop (what’s left of it!), “Laura’s” home and “Kevin’s” caravan park. (all this will mean nothing if you were never a Sea Change fan!).

A run where you can see the finish from the start, the start from the finish, and every pleasurable step in-between! It may even tempt you to make your own seachange!

Ripper Nipper Beach Fun Run
Starting at the Rip to River finish line (at the Ocean Grove main beach) and proceeding to Barwon Heads along the beach, turning at the same westerly mark as for the the Rip to River Classic. Finish at the finish line (funnily enough!).

5km Beach Run
Starting at the Rip to River finish line (at the Ocean Grove main beach) and proceeding to Barwon Heads along the beach, turning at a 2.5km mark. This mark is beyond the westerly turn mark for the Rip to River Classic and Nipper Ripper Beach Fun Run. Finish at the finish line (funnily enough!).
